Journey to CthulhuCon
Journey to CthulhuCon
`This October 6-8, in the
city of Portland, Oregon there will be a
HP Lovecraft Film festival, also known as Cthulhucon, PDX.
The event will feature a variety of panels, readings and such activities as
role playing/board gaming sessions, all with a lovecraftian bent. It’s interesting that one would host a film festival in
honor of Lovecraft considering how he felt
about films of his era. Initially, he was a fan of cinema as he told fellow
United Amateur Press Associate, Reinhardt Kleiner. In a 1915 letter he wrote,
“As you Surmise, I am a devotee of the Motion Picture(s)” But by 1933, his
romance with modern horror films had faded. In correspondence to Weird Tales
editor Farnsworth Wright he stated “ The Bat” made me drowse back in
early 1920’s and last year an alleged “Frankenstein” on the screen would have
made me drowse had not a posthumous sympathy for poor Mrs. Shelley made me see
red instead “Ugh!” And the screen “Dracula” 1931--I saw the beginning of that
in Miami, Fl but couldn’t bear to watch it drag to its full term of dreariness,
hence walked out into the fragrant tropical moonlight”
The films inspired by HP Lovecraft works run the gamut from Good (HP Lovecraft Historical Society's “Call of Cthulhu”). to the dreadful (“The Curse”, adapted from Colour Out of Space). They often take liberties with elements of his work, as with switching the sex of the protagonist from male to female in the Night Gallery’s adaptation of “CooL Air” and the introduction of erotic aspects in such films as Re-animator and The Dunwich Horror. Given the demands of his fiction, making films of Lovecraft work presents quite a challenge. Unlike most horror stories, cosmic horror is hard to depict because it represents forces difficult for most people to image or to conceive. Ghosts and spiritual creatures are easier for most people to anthropomorphize and objectify than an ancient, deathless entity that destroys and warps the fabric of reality. As with many android apps, console games, Modern film and television with Cthulhu Mythos themes continue to demonstrate viability of Lovecraft and his ideas, The upcoming HPL FilmFest shows the precept of Cosmic horror translate and communicate to modern audiences. As we journey to CthulhuCon, The hope for Dreamquest is to show potency and effectiveness of weird fiction themes.
